Amsterdam smart shops

The booming days of smart shops in Amsterdam have long gone.

Ever since the Dutch government banned the selling of dried magic mushrooms (in 2008) and fresh magic mushrooms (in 2009) by law, many Amsterdam smart shops had to close and focus on online sales.

This means magic mushrooms are not for sale any longer, but powerful substitutes such as Amsterdam truffles Dragon’s Dynamite are easy to get at Amsterdam smart shops and online at their internet shops.

Magic mushrooms

In 2008, over 40 smart shops in Amsterdam existed, selling so called ‘smart drugs’.

One of the most popular products were magic mushrooms.

Magic mushrooms (or ‘paddo’s‘ in Dutch), contain psilocin and psilocybin, substances that, when eaten, have strong psychedelic effects.

Deadly incident

Magic mushrooms are considered to be safe and not toxic.

However, the effect can be quite overwhelming and young tourists coming to Amsterdam tend to underestimate the effects of the hallucinations.

In March of 2008, a 17 year old French girl famously died after jumping of a bridge in Amsterdam. Allegedly, the girl had been under the influence of magic mushrooms.

This was not the first incident and by December of 2008, magic mushrooms were put on the list of ‘hard drugs’.

Smart shops and head shops

Comparable to so called head shops elsewhere (like England) and grow shops, smart shops sell drug related paraphernalia like (water) pipes, rolling papers and tips, grinders, vaporizers, weed seeds and home grow kits for marijuana and mushrooms.

Magic truffles

Although magic mushrooms are now forbidden, there are magic truffles in Amsterdam available, also called Philosopher’s Stones, that contain the natural ingredient of psilocybin. When eaten, they have a similar effect as magic mushrooms.

Although the effects depend very much on the person who takes the drugs (expectations, experience) and the surroundings (noisy, quiet, secure). In general, sensatory feelings change and most people feel relaxed.

Bad trip
People who have bad experiences (a ‘bad trip’) can feel confused, irritated or suffer from panic attacks, paranoia and depression.

Duration of Amsterdam truffles trip

So how long does a trip last? Well, the effects of Amsterdam magic truffles don’t last as long as mushrooms.

A magic truffle trip starts after 10 minutes to 1 hour. You will start to see and hear things more intensely. Then you will start to notice a rapid change in the perception of reality.

The nature of the trip depends upon the person taking the sclerotia and the mood or state of mind this person is in. Although one may experience similar effects, each experience will still be unique and very personal.

What they sell in Amsterdam smart shops

Apart from magic truffles, Amsterdam smart shops have products on sale such as the Peyote cactus, and pills to help you recover from alcohol and ecstasy hangovers. Also there are appliances available with which you can test the quality of all kinds of drugs, like mdma (XTC) and cocaine.

hi there are 17 lads coming to amsterdam in april will we be able to all get hold of magic truffles or will they be banned by then?

    • Tanja August 10, 2011 at 20:30

Hi. Thanks for your comment. At the moment there are no plans to ban magic truffles. So I think you will be ‘safe’ 😉

Hi, Im coming to amsterdam in september and I am just wondering whether smart shops still sell any smart drugs ie party pills or methadrone? and exactly what is available in the smart shops?

    • Tanja August 20, 2011 at 20:03

Smart shops sell smart drugs, yes…nothing chemical though, only natural…

      • lewis July 22, 2012 at 12:04

nonsense- smarshops sell plenty of chemical based “highs”. Most work to some degree, some better than others, some safer than others. Is possible to get plenty research chemical products. I strongly recomend not taking these, far better and safer with the real thing.

        • Azarius July 24, 2015 at 12:21

We’d like to inform readers that in the Netherlands, smartshops are supposed to sell only natural highs. Reliable smartshops carry the VLOS (the industry’s umbrella organisation) badge.

You may have found that some smartshops do sell chemicals, mostly in the UK where chemical legal highs have become increasingly popular (leading to dangerous situations).

Thanks for the info. On the way back to Amsterdam in a few days but I think I will give the truffles a miss. % of us took them the last time we were there and it was a bit of a weird trip for all of us. Didn’t like them at all I have to say. I might try some of the other legal stuff, but they had most of this here (in dublin) up until recently and I wasn’t a big fan of most of it.

What’s the difference between magic truffles and Dragon’s Dynamite? Also, how do they both differ from magic mushrooms?

Are there auditory and visual hallucinations with magic truffles and Dragon’s Dynamite?

Finally, is the active ingredient in all of them simply psilocybin? If so, why would magic truffles and Dragon’s Dynamite be legal, and magic mushrooms be illegal?

    • Joe November 28, 2011 at 04:14

Dragon’s Dynamite is a type of magic truffle. It’s official name is Psilocybe Pajateros. It is very potent – 15 grams will put you in another universe.

Yes, as with magic mushrooms, the main active ingredient in magic truffles is psilocybin (some psilocin is also present). Once ingested, the psilocybin is metabolized to psilocin.

I don’t know the legal loophole which allows truffles to be sold, but not mushrooms. But I can assure you, these truffles can produce a profound trip. In fact, the Dragon’s Dynamite trip I had in Amsterdam was stronger than any magic mushroom trip I’ve ever had…just insanely intense.

If you want a comparison, the truffles are slightly less visual than the mushrooms, but they are far more euphoric. It’s probably the ratio of the different alkaloids that produces the slightly different effects.

Ohh Amsterdam, such a charming place.

I will be returning in late march of 2012 for a nice week or so stay. You mention smart shops having natural products, is there ANY way you would be able to get in touch with ayahuasca?

Surly you know specifically what it is I’m looking for…. perhaps I will try the Dragon’s Dynamite as its unfortunately the only trip that is easy to find & trustworthy.

Any guidance you can offer is appreciated.

    • Tanja November 29, 2011 at 10:11

      Hi Brandon,
The plants that Ayahuasca is made from, are not illegal and you can buy them online and prepare your own. The ingredient DMT, that gives the effects, is officially considered ‘hard drugs’ in The Netherlands, thought it is tolerated for use by certain religious groups (eg Santo Daime in Amsterdam).

I don’t know if they sell ayahuasca in smart shops, or something similar, just ask when you get here, or call ahead. It sure is available online: check for example:

I am just back and ended up in a smart shop again. Had a box of the truffles and they are the biggest waste of money you are going to come across there. We did find a place with peyote however, and that stuff is off the wall.

  7. Andre January 11, 2012 at 20:42

Hey guys, I was wondering about peyote availability at these shops. I’ve snooped around some websites and so far as I can tell, they sell the whole cactus for cultivation (at a hefty price, I might add). Is there any place that just sells the peyote buttons?

  8. Jason January 20, 2012 at 19:10

Hopefully you will see my reply.
Anyways, my wife and i will be going there for the first time this spring. I was wondering how the laws were in regards to MDMA (finding MDMA in the states has been challenging the last few years). I know its not for sale legally… Is it hard to find and how strict are the law in regards to its usage?

What is the etiquette for testing the pills at a smart shop?

  9. TonyZ January 22, 2012 at 05:40

I will be in the Dam during the second week of March. Looking for a smart shop that allows one to indulge in their purchases on site. Preferably in a comfortable environment conducive to tripping.

I have been in Amsterdam several times and we try atlantis magic truffles there and last week we order online from and i was for 6 hours in Amsterdam :)

  12. johhny Bravo December 13, 2012 at 17:08

Magic truffles will stay ‘ legal’ in the Netherlands. The Dutch Parlement is not planning to ban this product from smartshops. Luckly also available online in some great online shops. Magic truffles shop Amsterdam were very kind and informative. No bullshit just truffles! should be their slogan 😉

When you visit Amsterdam make sure you go to a smartshop and do not buy them in a souvenirshop. most times they will sell bad stuff, with no advise at all.

  13. bruce holland December 21, 2012 at 23:03

  14. P.mccullagh February 16, 2013 at 14:17

  15. Gala May 29, 2014 at 00:06

    Hi there,
I´ve tried Ayahuasca and Peyote before. I am going to Amsterdam first time and I would like to know if mushrooms are still available in smart shops. I really want something visual and I don´t know if the truffles are so…

    • Tanja May 29, 2014 at 08:52

As it says in the article, mushrooms are not available in Amsterdam smart shops.

  16. Cactus-man March 14, 2015 at 10:04

Hi Tanja, i’m heading to Am’dam by late April. I am a cacti collector (not a smart drugs fan anyway) but specimens from the genus Lophophora (peyote cactus) are outlawed in my fascist country.

So I’m looking for a shop where to buy them.

I’ve heard that L.williamsii cacti sold at the smartshops are quite pricy. Do you know other cacti shops or markets where to get these nice plants at a reasoneable price?

    Thank you so much

If you feel more comfortable you can also answer me at

    • Tanja March 14, 2015 at 11:14

      Hi Cactus-man
In Holland you can try any tuincentrum (gardening centre, large shops for garden stuff and plants), but I doubt they sell peyote. (google for tuincentrum amsterdam and you will get the shops). Another option is the Flower Market (in Dutch: Bloemenmarkt), in the centre of Amsterdam. It’s in all the tourist guides.
If you decide to buy online at smart shop Azarius, please use this link, I am their partner: good luck!

Hey i am going to Amsterdam this summer and i was wondering:

What are the laws around bringing truffles back to the UK?

    Is it legal?

If so is there a restriction on how much you can bring back?

    • Tanja June 19, 2015 at 11:30

Uk laws apply! I don’t know your laws…

  18. Karim July 22, 2015 at 00:14

Hello. Thanks for the info. I live in Germany, and I’d like to buy Magic Truffles online. Is there a problem to do this in Germany?
    Thanks in advance!
