10 Cool Hotels

There are all kinds of hotels in Amsterdam. There are hotels for fashion lovers and history lovers, hotels for rock ‘n roll stars and for backpackers. There are hotels on boats, on bridges and with views on the canal. There are hip hotels, boutique hotels, hotels with a view, hotels with excellent room service. There are hotels with a swimming pool in Amsterdam. But only some hotels in Amsterdam are truly cool.

Here’s a list of 10 cool hotels in Amsterdam:

1. The Fashion of The Exchange

One of the coolest hotels in Amsterdam is The Exchange.

Right across Amsterdam Central Station is Hotel The Exchange. The owners asked students of the Amsterdam Fashion Institute to decorate the rooms as if they were fashion models. The result are very 61 cool hotel rooms, each with its own unique style and theme. Must be one of the coolest hotels in Amsterdam.

2. The Fascinating History of Lloyd Hotel

The rooms, the wonderful hotel lobby, it all breathes history.

Lloyd Hotel is located in the Eastern Docklands area. The grand building was built in the 1920s for a Dutch shipping company KHL. This hotel’s got history.

Thousands of emigrants, mainly Jews from Eastern Europe, stayed in the rooms of this hotel while they were waiting for the ship to take them to the promised land: South America. In later years, the building was, more morbidly, used as a prison for young boys and functioned as a shelter for Jewish refugees. It’s the charm of the Lloyd’s that hey cherish the historic value of the building. In the staircase, you can learn everything about the stories through old photographs and texts.

Lloyd Hotel also features cool exhibitions, performances, collections, textiles, jewelry and yes, bonsai. There is a wonderful terrace on the south side of the building. Central Station is 5 minutes by tram. It’s a 25-minute walk to the center.

5. Coolest Hotel in Amsterdam to Chill: Volkshotel

Hot tubs and sauna with a view at Volkshotel.

All reviews praise the cool vibes that hang in Volkshotel. And that could be correct.

Amsterdam residents are familiar with the building because it’s a ‘breeding place’, a place where creatives can rent space to work. Volkshotel is also famous because of its popular bar/ restaurant/club: Canvas on the 7th floor.

But the best thing about Volkshotel is on the 8th floor. There’s an amazing outdoor patio here with hot tubs! Oh yeah. On Sundays they organize ‘Bath sessions’: acoustic live music while you soak. So cool.

8. Boat. Hotel. Botel.

Botel is moored in NDSM.

Botel is a huge and rather ugly ship. Luckily it is moored at NDSM! Whether you want to party all night at the hip and happening old shipyard or in the center of Amsterdam, you are never more than 15 minutes away (free ferry!) from your bed!

Though small, the bedrooms have great views! A boat that rocks.

9. Sleep in a monument: Pestana Amsterdam Riverside

Along the river Amstel, what a cool setting for a Town Hall, now a hotel.

The Pestana Amsterdam Riverside Hotel is located in a monumental building in De Pijp neighbourhood. This is an old Town Hall. Funnily enough, it wasn’t the Town Hall of Amsterdam. Neighboring Amstelveen tried to scare Amsterdam by building this imposing Neo-Renaissance structure in 1889. Amsterdam, not impressed, absorbed the entire area into the municipality of Amsterdam in 1896.

History aside, this hotel is not just cool. It’s fancy. And it’s brand new, so you can be sure you are enjoying 2021st-state-of-the-art-luxury (it’s got 5 stars). Obviously, that means there is a wellness area with saunas and an indoor swimming pool.

10. Hans Brinker. Quite honestly not the best.

On the list of cool hotels in Amsterdam, we must add Hans Brinker. I will just quote their website: “Welcome to the Hans Brinker: quite honestly not the best, but definitely the most memorable hostel in Amsterdam. At the Hans Brinker Hostel you get what you pay for. And because you don’t pay much you won’t get any of the following things: a swimming pool, room service, honeymoon-suites, a gym, tiny bottles of shampoo, a spa-bath or bellboys in silly hats. You will simply get a basic room in the center of either Lisbon or Amsterdam that is worth every penny.
