Must see: Amsterdam’s unofficial Banksy museum Moco

The Moco Museum in Amsterdam presents original work by street artist Banksy. The modern contemporary museum (Moco) at Amsterdam’s Museum Square is the first museum in the world to exhibit Banksy’s art in a museum set-up. Moco Museum also has temporary exhibitions.

Banksy in Amsterdam

Banksy’s work is famous all over the world. His elegant street art is often a satirical comment on the state of the world (capitalism, war) in easy to swallow and easy-to-follow images. The Banksy Museum Moco in Amsterdam is a success among a young, international crowd. Often it gets so busy, it’s best to book tickets online to skip the line.

Below you will find links to tickets to the Moco Museum in Amsterdam and some interesting combination tickets. Buying via What’s up with Amsterdam is not more expensive and helps supporting the website!

Moco Museum displays all his famous works like Laugh Now, Barcode, Girl with the Balloon, Kids on Guns, Pulp Fiction, Flower Thrower, Monkey Queen, Kate Moss, Bomb Hugger, Soup Can and many more.

Banksy’s message to the world is in black and white, with a touch of red. Children hugging weapons of destruction, brightly colored flowers thrown by a young protester, a girl reaching for a red balloon in the sky. That the world, in reality, is more complicated, might be a little more difficult to portray in spray paint.

The exhibition organizers are a Dutch couple who run an art gallery in the nearby art and antique area Spiegelstraat. They put the collection together by borrowing Banksy’s artworks from their art collecting friends and connections.

Museum Square Amsterdam

The museum is housed in Villa Alsberg, a beautiful mansion from 1904 on Museum Square. The house has wonderful details on the inside and outside, but it can get crowded quickly in the many small rooms and narrow corridors.

Now, what would Banksy the political activist think of all this, is a question that comes to mind when you enter rooms themed ‘anti-capitalism’ and ‘weaponry’ and look at framed photos of street graffiti, ripped-out-of-the-wall pieces of wood with spray paint on it and buy your Banksy-bag at the souvenir shop on your way out. Well, the anonymous artist from England has not said anything about the museum, which was set up without his permission. The Banksy museum in Amsterdam certainly gives you some food for thought.
