Amsterdam ice cream shop Monte Pelmo in the lovely Jordaan Quarter makes the best ice cream in Amsterdam. Luckily for us, they don’t only sell to restaurants. Monte Pelmo has a little shop in the Jordaan where you can try out their latest flavours.
Montel Pelmo named after a mountain in the Italian Dolomites, but the best ice cream shop in Amsterdam has its roots firmly in Dutch ground. The family does have links to Italy though. They started out making spaghetti and ice creams for Italian immigrants who worked in Amsterdam in 1957. One of the sisters even married an Italian. They make ice cream with a perfect combination of Dutch creaminess and Italian flavor.
Monte Pelmo is open every day from 13.00 till 22.00.
Address: 2e Anjeliersdwarsstraat 17.
IJscuypje has been so successful from the day they started, they have now 24 ice cream parlors in greater Amsterdam! The ice cream, yogurt ice, and milkshakes are artisanally made of the biological milk of Dutch cows. The makers claim their ice cream is based on ancient Dutch recipes.
Whether this is true or not, the ice creams do have a typical Dutch charm: a rich, creamy flavour with a strong, compact bite. In winter, IJscuypje changes name to Stamppotje and sells typical Dutch stamppot (take away), a simple but warming winter food.
IJscuypje sells ice only in summer. Open from 12.00 to 22.00.
Addresses: Westergasfabriek, Prinsengracht 292; Eerste van der Helststraat 27; Haarlemmerdijk 14; Amstelveenseweg 218
Ice Cream Shop IJsmanschap does something very cool: they make their own ice cream popsicles. Their cute, hand made popsicles are climate-proof, bikini-proof and won’t damage your heart. That means that their strawberry popsicles actually have vitamin C in them, taste like and are made of actual strawberry.
De IJsmakerij is another Dutch-Italian creation. The ice cream is made from milk from a local dairy farm using an Italian ice cream machine and it runs solar power. The ice cream is made in Amsterdam West. You can try it at the Noordermarkt Kantine and in the Kinkerstraat at La La IJs Ice Cream Shop.
Tofani on Kloveniersburgwal 16. Tofani is your best choice of ice cream when you are eating out around Nieuwmarkt and the red light district. Experts and fans agree that this is the best place in Amsterdam to get a chocolate ice cream. Open till midnight, yeah!
In the southern area of Riverenbuurt, the Amsterdam ice cream stands of Pisa ais pretty good. The ice cream parlor in south Amsterdam has Italian roots.
Pisa has been at the same location since 1953. Originally from Italy, the family company has been taken over by Marco Morelli, a ‘Maestro Gelatiere’. Each season they make over 60 different flavors. Excellent flavors are Pistache and Grapefruit. Try the chocolate at Amsterdam ice cream shop Venetië and let me know which one is better!
